Why

Global POV: There is a huge capabilities overhang in AI where the latent space of possible things to build has expanded massively in the past three years (due to the incredible progress made in large models), but not enough people are exploring them yet. In particular, we are running into practical limitations with ever-larger model and dataset size, and need to explore embedding custom datasets and contextual long term memory for AI applications.

Chroma POV: We want talented hackers to use us in anger, give feedback, and build cool apps that inspire everyone else. We also raised a lot of money and we're hiring slow so we might as well spend it on HiR programs that offer low upfront commitment but have high potential upside.

Your POV: If you have been feeling the AI urge, this is a viable, low commitment path to quit your job, come to SF (if you're out of town), and build together with an elite startup team that is plugged into the heart of the AI wave.

There is no explicit hiring promise at the end of the program, but of course we'd love to chat if there is mutual interest.

Request For Projects

Non exhaustive list of the kinds of things we want to see more of in the world:

  • ChatGPT for your Docs boring. no.
  • Long lived conversations: What would a good implementation of an AI therapist, teacher, or advisor look like who remembered what you did/said 1 day/week/month/year ago?
  • Mind uploading: How do you memorialize a loved one? How do you upload yourself to the everlasting ether?
  • AI agents: memory compression and storage for AI agents
  • Personal search: better search for browser history
  • Augmented Reality Pokedex: it's exactly what you think it is
  • Spaced Repetition App: teaching from arbitrary sized corpuses e.g. https://andymatuschak.org/ or https://gwern.net/
  • Theory of Mind: e.g. Educational chatbot that knows what you don't know
  • Other areas of interest to us:
    • Better code search
    • Multi-modal AI
    • RETRO style architectures
    • AI-enhanced dating app with chat that doesn't suck
    • Web Research Agent
    • Dynamic/Ephemeral UI creation
